09 July 2015

Hey I feel like I woke up in a dream, – I’ve seen a real life and it aint what it seems, don’t wake me up now please let a brother sleep. Here’s where I wanna be so you know I gotta keep >> moving, I came from the bottom, what I got to fear, I came from the bottom now I’m finally here.

Hip-Hop artist Phillip Murray; stage name Philly – won last year’s triple j Unearthed NIMA Competition and has been dreaming it up ever since. Keep dreaming Philly we say, as this week sees him selected as a NIMA Finalist in the category of “New Talent of the Year 2015”. To coincide with this good news Philly releases a film-clip to accompany his song Dreamchaser. The film clip gives a raw insight into Philly’s life. The gritty low budget clip was shot in Philly’s stark lounge room with its blank walls and dodgy couch, revealing a lot about the harsh environs this aspiring artist comes from. His writing pad and computer are his only pathways out and he intends to fully use them.

After instantly spot-adding Dreamchaser triple j invited Philly to record a Like A Version which goes to air this Friday 10th July – the day after triple j announce this year’s Unearthed NIMA winner.

To this year’s Unearthed/NIMA winner Philly says “it is the best way to get your music out there”.

Philly releases a new 5 track EP also titled Dreamchaser to coincide with the film clip release and his performance at Leaps & Bound hip-hop festival in Melbourne with Briggs on Thursday 9th July.

Philly, 23, was born in the golden era of hip-hop in 1991. By the age of four his older brothers had a huge collection and all he ever listened to was hip-hop. The first song he could remember was Naughty by Nature’s ‘Hip Hop Hooray’ – Philly’s destiny was set.

He began writing rhymes, dubbing beats & rapping in public and soon became a hip-hop sensation with a big following of kids in his hometown Mildura; his traditional homeland down Swan Hill side near the banks of the mighty Murray River.

The accolades began to flow in 2010 when Philly won the National Noel Tovey Achievement Award and became Mildura’s NAIDOC Artist of the Year. He dreamed bigger dreams, signed with Payback Records, supported the Yung Warriors on their national tour [2011], and nationally with Briggs in 2014 & aims to perform in the US. He won triple j’s Unearthed NIMA Competition in 2014 earning him a performance slot alongside Briggs, Jimblah & The Last Kinection. “I feel like I’m dreaming,” he said on the night.

The following week his debut single We On shot to No.5 on iTunes Hip Hop chart and now; a year later – he releases Dreamchaser with an album titled Not My Life and a national tour to follow in September.
