27th January 2015 – For Immediate Release

Born into rock royalty, multi-awarded band East Journey have collaborated with their forefathers and mentors Yothu Yindi on an EP titled The Genesis Project to be released on Feb 6 by MGM Distribution. This project heralds in a new dawn for the young group from Yirrkala, NT.

Recorded in Sydney and Cairns, The Genesis Project was produced by LA rocker and producer Stevie Salas whose credentials include Mick Jagger, Aerosmith, Parliament Funk and Justin Timberlake, and was mastered in the US by Tom Baker.Salas, who has added a modern edge to the sound of both bands on this release, initially made contact via East Journey’s Facebook page reaching out randomly and stating he was looking to work with quality musicians from Arnhem Land. After a lengthy period of discussion between members of Yothu Yindi, East Journey and Salas, all parties decided to come together and create The Genesis Project.

The ten track EP consists of previous material that has been rewritten and rearranged by original Yothu Yindi members Ben Hakalitz, Buruka Tau & Stu Kellawayin collaboration with East Journey, whilst Salas contributed to this process with the Salas/Moore remix ofSong of Arnhem Land.

The EP consists of five full length songs woven together with snippets from two Yolgnu ceremonial songs [songlines] that East Journey have been given permission to publicly record specifically for The Genesis Project. Titled Mokuy and Bonba they represent the songline stories “Spirit” and “Butterfly”. See *below for a brief explanations on these two Yolngu words.

“…we had all been worrying who was going to keep the vision of Yothu Yindi going; and East Journey are keeping it alive for the old man [the late Dr M Yunupingu], for Yothu Yindi and for our families. Each generation needs to take responsibility to mentor the next generation, and that’s what we [Yothu Yindi] have done with East Journey to continue this important legacy; and we hope that East Journey will do it with the next generation coming up behind them, says Witiyana Marika co-Founder and original member of Yothu Yindi.

A live tour featuring East Journey and the Yothu Yindi members listed below is expected in the latter part of 2015.

SNAPSHOT BACKGROUND

N.E. Arnhem Land band East Journey made a firm impression with debut album Guwak in 2012. They accrued national airplay, awards, critical reviews, festival slots, and lead-singer Rrawun Maymuru penned the song Bayini giving Gurrumul his first No.1 ARIA Chart. Importantly East Journey established themselves as the No. 1 Indigenous live rock act to watch out for in Australia.

Interesting factoid:

Buruka Tau (Yothu Yindi) taught the band members from Sheppard how to play their instruments, and is still their musical director and mentor, so small world!

Cultural Factoid:

Bonba:  Bonba is a word for all butterflies associated with Dhuwa moieties, and when the people move through place to place and see the butterfly fluttering and dancing in the wind; they sing it through their songlines.

Mokuy: Mokuy (spirit) represents a journey to a promised land.  When someone from the Dhuwa Moiety passes away the spirit goes to a certain place called Burralku.

Thanks to Qantas and DFAT the bands will perform songs from The Genesis Project at G’Day LA on January 31st.

Supported by the Australian Government through the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Program, an initiative of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The Genesis Project EP will be physically and digitally released on February 6th via MGM.

New single EMU will be released digitally.
